Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Do you suffer from gastrointestinal disturbances? You often feel strongly bloated or have a protruding belly? You need to, either during or immediately after a meal, go to the toilet? Or you have suffered from diarrhoea or constipation or even alternating stool behaviours over a longer period of time?

Diagnosis

In order to provide the very common diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, other disorders of the gastrointestinal system and food intolerances are initially excluded (exclusion diagnosis).

Clarification

After a detailed discussion in conjunction with an assessment of your risk profile for serious gastrointestinal diseases, we would work out a structured plan with you to consider further evaluation and treatment. Examinations such as blood and stool tests, an ultrasound of the internal organs, tests for screening food intolerance or a gastro- and/or colonoscopy may be necessary.

Therapy

In the planning of IBS treatment, we can also consider further possible diet and drug therapies in conjunction with the initial detailed discussion of the disease and a possible change in lifestyle. Furthermore, other forms of therapy such as hypnotherapy or alternative therapies can be considered and organised within our practice.

All these could be the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Perhaps you have already noticed that certain foods disagree with you or cause discomfort? Perhaps you've also had a medical evaluation with or without gastro-/colonoscopy and already received a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome?

Or the diagnosis was fructose intolerance, lactose intolerance (and despite a low in lactose/lactose-free symptoms persist), other food intolerances or diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis)? Possibly you have the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, but the symptoms are persistent, have become stronger or have changed?

Preparation

Preparation

For a faster and more accurate process in reaching our common goal of assessing your condition, it would be very helpful to print out and complete our questionnaire before your consultation. It is also essential to bring all medical reports/results from any previous medical examinations.

The irritable bowel syndrome questionnaire is available for downloading here.
